We are thrilled to share an important milestone for our team!

Our study “The benefits of green roofs for urban water management and thermal regulation: Insights from Catania (Sicily, Italy)” has been published in the prestigious international journal Ecological Engineering, the result of two years of field monitoring (2024–2025) on the experimental green roof at Di3A – Unict – Department of Agriculture, Food and Environment, Università di Catania.

This achievement rewards the dedicated and rigorous work of the “Hydraulics and Territory” research team, who has been developing nature-based solutions for sustainable urban water management and heat mitigation in Mediterranean climates for years.

The results speak for themselves: up to 70% reduction in stormwater runoff, surface cooling of 3–5°C, and remarkable structural thermal stability compared to conventional roofs.

A special thanks also goes to landscape agronomist Annibale Sicurella of laborarch,
studio, for his essential technical support in designing and building the green roof that made this research possible.

A project bringing together science, nature and design for the benefit of our cities
