On 21 May 2026, a seminar was held at the Department of Agriculture, Food and Environment (Di3A) of the University of Catania dedicated to Nature-Based Solutions for Urban Flood Risk Mitigation, with focus on case studies from the city of Catania. The event, organized in collaboration with CSEI Catania and within the framework of the CARDIMED project funded by the European Union, witnessed the participation of international delegations representing partners of the ERASMUS+ KA210 project “RAIN – Raising Awareness against natural disasters and Improving the Network of volunteers in local publics”: the I.C.S. Federico II di Svevia (Mascalucia, Italy), the District of Haymana (Ankara, Turkey), Ankara University – AFAM (Ankara, Turkey), the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority – AFAD (Ankara, Turkey), Check-IN – Cooperação e Desenvolvimento (Lisbon, Portugal), and the Associazione Onlus CMB Italia (Milan, Italy).
The seminar was structured through an institutional opening session featuring introductory remarks by Prof. Mario D’Amico, Director of Di3A at the University of Catania, Prof. Ferdinando Branca, Delegate for Third Mission of Di3A, and Prof. Giuseppe Cirelli, Scientific Coordinator of the CARDIMED project. Prof.ssa Marialina Scariano, responsible for Educational Strategic Planning and ERASMUS contact person of I.C.S. Federico II di Svevia in Mascalucia, and Mehmet Takar, Coordinator of the ERASMUS+ KA210 “RAIN” project representing the District of Haymana in Ankara, also participated. The main scientific session was conducted by Prof.ssa Feliciana Licciardello and Dr. Liviana Sciuto from Di3A, who presented a lecture entitled “Nature-Based Solutions for Urban Flood Risk Mitigation: Case Studies from Catania”, illustrating the practical applications of Nature-Based Solutions within the urban Catania context. The event concluded with a technical visit to the green roof of Di3A, allowing participants to directly observe a green infrastructure functional to urban hydrogeological risk mitigation, accompanied by an Aperigreen featuring local and Sicilian products.
