On November 16, 2023, the inauguration of the semi-intensive green roof took place, covering the atrium of Building B of the Bioscientific Center of the Department of Agriculture, Food and Environment (Di3A) at the University of Catania, located at Via S. Sofia 100. This green roof has been described as the largest in Sicily created by a public administration, featuring characteristics of both intensive and extensive green roofs. It spans an area of 900 square meters and includes 1500 herbaceous or shrubby plants, 3 technologies with different substrates, 950 meters of dripping wings, 6300 self-compensating drippers, a multi-parametric weather station, and a rainwater monitoring system with 8 ultrasonic flow meters.

The roof’s creation was made possible through the GIFLUID project, standing for “Green Infrastructures to mitigate Flood risks in Urban and sub-urban areas and to Improve the quality of rainwater Discharges”, part of the Interreg VA Italia-Malta 2014-2020 program, focusing on innovative interventions in the cross-border territory between Italy and Malta.

Present at the event were the magnificent rector of the University of Catania, Francesco Priolo, the professor in charge of the GIFLUID project Giuseppe Luigi Cirelli, the department director Mario D’Amico, the vice-director Simona Consoli, as well as many other faculty members of the department and various research groups.
